Oedipus the King and Movie Minority report, connection with for telling the future

Texts Plato’s excerpt and out of class movie the Matrix

Blog 8

In class we have discussed about 3 movies and 4 texts. There have been many connections and ideas that came up over and over again. Such as in ‘Oedipus the King’ and the movie Minority report. There was a huge similarity and an idea that stood out to me the most.  Oedipus was told that he was going to commit a crime by killing his father and having kids with his mother. He couldn’t bear to hear this so he got away from the people he thought to be his real parents.  Every action led to a step closer to his fate and for the prophecy to come true. In the movie, the pre-cogs told the future and they help stop crimes before they happened. But every future that was told was sure to happen but ONE. The main character John Anderson was said to commit a murder but he didn’t. He stopped himself before he actually did it. He had a choice and so did Oedipus. Oedipus could have stopped himself from killing his father but he didn’t. For a person that was told that he was going to kill his own father, I would have stayed away from getting angry and actually killing anyone at all. I choose this idea because it came out to me the most how when someone tells you your future and you really want to change it you can do so if you really want to, how a person has free will to think and act like they want to but to an extent of course. No one can really predict the future. We have in our hands our own outcome. We can choose from many different options, there isn’t always just two. In class we discussed about this topic and I couldn’t stop thinking and coming up with my own ideas why it is the way it is. The way we were programed was to have our own minds and having to choose our own decisions. No one else chooses but us. This brings up another connection to mind as well. In the movie Gattaca Vincent made his own future come alive. He always dreamed about being in space and everyone else told him otherwise but he didn’t stop until he made it. His future came true because of the choices he made throughout the movie.

Blog 7: Reflection on blogging

I have definitely benefited from writing blogs. It’s nothing like a journal but in some ways it is. My classmates and even others can view my blogs so every time I post one up I double check just in case there are any grammar errors or anything that doesn’t make sense at all. Through my experience I learned that viewing others blogs and comparing them to mine I’ve gotten better in my writing. There are many that are strong writers and every time they post their blog up I can’t help but just look and see how they made their point across. At first I wasn’t too sure about these blogs because I was sort of shy if anyone else read my writing but now I think I’m pretty confident when it comes to writing them online for public views. Journals are for yourself and your professor to view. No one else can comment or give their opinion about your writing but on blogger.com they could in an instant. I guess that’s what frightened me at first. When someone comments on any of the posts you have put up, they aren’t trying to offend you in any way. All they are trying to do is help improve your writing and give you feedback on what they think you should fix and I think that is the greatest benefit in using blogger. As I grow as a writer so do my blogs. I can view my old blogs and compare them to my new ones. I see my improvement and so do others.

Millions of people have a blog of their own and you can defiantly see everyone’s thoughts and see what type of person they are. With one simple blog people can tell what kind of personality you have.  Not all are advantages I might say, there are disadvantages as well. Many people find the NEED to post up an unnecessary comments that might get someone else feeling uncomfortable in any way. You have to be ready for those types of comments posted up by idiots. If someone is the type of person to be extremely shy and not want anyone else viewing or giving feedback at all then sadly blogger isn’t for you. I personally find blogger to be helpful and I kind of enjoy it at times. I see the thoughts of myself and people I know in class posted up and I find it fun to read their blogs and improve mine. Sadly I think I wouldn’t have used blogger if it weren’t for this class but I’m glad I took this class and experienced using blogger.

Blog 6: Free will and determinism

The movie "Minority Report" and the play 'Oedipus the King' both have main characters and how they each experienced free will and determinism. In the Article "Free will and determinism in the world of minority and report" expands on the situation and how each person has their own choices for their own actions.

In the movie "Minority Report"  they have a pre-crime system. They have pre-cogs that for see the future and  see crimes before they are committed. So they arrest people that haven't even committed any crime. I agree that it is unfair to arrest someone before they even do anything but in a way this program has saved millions of people in the movie. In the article "Free will and determinism in the world of minority report" explains "The fact that you prevented it from happening doesn't change the fact that it was going to happen." I agree with this statement completely. Everything that was meant to be is going to happen. No one knows if that person was going to change their mind.

In The play "Oedipus The King" Oedipus' parents gave him away because of the prophecy that was told that Oedipus was going to kill his dad and have kids with his mother. So they sent him away. Free will might have interfered with the prophecy . Who said that the prophecy was true? Only the person has the choices. Oedipus parents had the choice and they chose to get rid of their son because of what someone else said.  Just like in the movie Howard Marks had a choice. The precogs saw the future and it was that he was going to kill his wife and her lover but who really knew it was going to happen? they arrested him before he even did anything. he could have changed his mind at any moment.
